ECG Blames Power Outages on Sunday’s Rainstorm, Says Engineers Working to Restore Supply

Parts of Accra and Tema were thrown into darkness on Sunday, May 18, 2025, following several hours of torrential rainfall that caused widespread flooding.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has confirmed that the rainstorm triggered multiple faults within its distribution network, leading to outages in various parts of the city.

In a public announcement issued late Sunday, ECG stated, “….that the heavy rainstorm that hit parts of the country today, Sunday, 18th May, 2025, has caused some outages within our network.”

The service provider, however assured affected customers that its technical teams were working “assiduously to repair the faults and restore power supply.”

Earlier in the day, the downpour inundated low-lying communities, including Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adentan-Dodowa, and Adjei-Kojo in Tema West, with fast-moving floodwaters swamping roads, homes, and businesses. Commuters were left stranded, and several vehicles broke down, especially along the Awudome Roundabout to Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange stretch, which was completely submerged.

In Adabraka, youth volunteers were seen stepping in to assist drivers by redirecting traffic and alerting motorists to hidden dangers under the water.

Amid the chaos, ECG urged the public to report localised outages, fallen poles, or sagging conductors via its 24-hour call centre or official social media handles.

“Individual/localised outages and incidents of fallen poles, or sagging conductors within customers’ vicinities should be reported to the ECG Call Centre on 0302-611611, the nearest ECG office, or reach us on our social media handles via @ECGghOfficial on Facebook, X, or Instagram for prompt intervention.”
