A coalition of political parties, spearheaded by the largest opposition, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has hit the streets of Accra to voice strong opposition to what they describe as an attack on judicial independence.
The protest, scheduled for today, Monday, May 5, 2025, follows the controversial suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, a decision that has sparked outrage among opposition leaders, legal professionals, and civil society groups. The coalition alleges that the suspension was politically motivated and undermines the independence of the judiciary, a key pillar of Ghana’s democratic framework.
According to the NPP leadership and members of the coalition, the government’s actions are “an unprecedented interference in the affairs of the judiciary.”
Demonstrators who have turned out in their numbers are carrying placards bearing messages such as “Hands Off Our Judiciary,” “Justice Must Be Free,” and “Reinstate the Chief Justice Now.”
In a press statement released ahead of the protest, the coalition argued that the circumstances surrounding Chief Justice Torkornoo’s suspension lacked transparency and due process.
“This is not just about one person,” the statement read. “It is about protecting the integrity of our judicial system from political manipulation.”
The presidency has yet to issue an official response to the allegations of political interference. Meanwhile, legal analysts continue to debate the constitutional grounds for the Chief Justice’s suspension, with some calling for an independent review of the decision.
The coalition says it will continue to mount pressure until Chief Justice Torkornoo is reinstated or a credible explanation is provided by the relevant authorities.
