Mustapha Foyo Gbande, Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has acknowledged that his party’s lack of vigilance led to their defeat in the 2020 elections.
In an interview on Onua TV’s Maakye, Mr Gbande stated, “Captain, I must admit, we slept in 2020, we were asleep, and this time around we are well awake.”
Gbande alleged that the government is using Dr Eric Bossman Asare, a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, to manipulate the electoral process. “Bossman is the one being used currently by the government. He is a dangerous actor at the Electoral Commission today… What does Bossman have to hide?” he questioned.
Gbande’s concerns stem from errors in the voters’ register, which the NDC brought to the EC’s attention. The NDC had accused the Commission of deliberately transferring voters to different centres without their knowledge.
Dr. Eric Bossman Asare admitted to errors but denied intentional rigging, stating, “Preliminary investigations… revealed that voter transfers were indeed effected for Thirty-Eight (38) individuals using the credentials of an Electoral Commission Official… It is also absolutely untrue that the Commission has added names to the Voters Register to rig elections for a particular party.”
Gbande emphasized that the NDC is now vigilant and will not allow a repeat of the 2020 experience.
