Speaker Bagbin Commends GNFS for Swift Action in Parliament Fire, Urges MPs to Prioritize Safety

Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has expressed profound gratitude to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) for their timely intervention during the fire outbreak at the Job 600 building in Parliament House on the morning of Tuesday, August 27, 2024.

Before the commencement of the first sitting of the extraordinary meeting of Parliament on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, the Rt. Hon. Speaker acknowledged that had it not been for the swift response of the GNFS officers, the situation could have been much worse.

“Permit me to first commend the officers of the National Fire Service for their swift response to a fire incident in an office on the Mezzanine floor of the Job 600 building,” he said.

“But for their timely intervention, I sincerely cannot tell what might have happened. To all the officers—from the national office to the regional and local stations at Parliament House—we say thank you,” he added.

The fire caused damage to a storeroom, and smoke was seen billowing from several offices as GNFS personnel worked to extinguish the blaze. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Staff and workers in the building were swiftly evacuated to designated assembly points as emergency services worked to extinguish the fire and investigate its cause.

Bagbin also cautioned that while investigations by the Ghana National Fire Service are ongoing, everyone in Parliament must remain vigilant and adhere to all safety precautions to prevent such incidents in the future.

“I urge each and every one of you to prioritize safety in all that you do, be vigilant, and follow all safety precautions to prevent such incidents in the future,” he advised.
