The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has acknowledged a significant water supply deficit affecting Ho and surrounding communities, while outlining government interventions aimed at expanding access to potable water across the region.
Speaking during a meeting with the Volta Regional House of Chiefs in Ho, Mr Gunu said current water production levels fall far below demand, creating serious supply challenges for residents and institutions.
He disclosed that Ho and nearby areas require about 33,000 cubic metres of water daily, but existing facilities are only able to produce approximately 11,000 cubic metres, leaving a wide supply gap.
According to him, the shortfall has placed pressure on communities and highlighted the urgent need for infrastructure expansion to meet growing population and economic demands in the regional capital and surrounding districts.
To address the challenge, he said the government is working to expand the Kpeve water system as part of efforts to improve supply reliability and distribution efficiency within affected communities.
He also announced progress on the Sogakope Water Supply Project, which is expected to significantly boost water availability across multiple districts once completed.
Mr Gunu said that the first phase of the project will supply water from Sogakope through Adidome to Mafi-Kumase, while the second phase will extend coverage to Akatsi, Aflao and surrounding communities.
He added that the completed project is projected to deliver about 35,000 cubic metres of water daily, which he said would substantially close the existing supply gap and improve access to safe drinking water across the Volta Region.
