The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has given his blessing to the proposed 198.7-kilometre Accra–Kumasi Expressway Project, urging the government to ensure the project is executed efficiently and completed within schedule.
The blessing was given when the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, and the Deputy Minister for Defence, Brogya Genfi, paid a joint courtesy call on the Asantehene on Friday, April 10, 2026, to brief him on the scope and implementation plans for the project.
During the engagement, Otumfuo was informed that the Ghana Armed Forces would be involved in the initial phase of the project to enhance its feasibility, particularly in earthworks and engineering support. The Asantehene welcomed the approach and commended the government for adopting innovative strategies to fast-track the project.
The delegation included the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong; Director of Engineering Services at GAF, Colonel Jonas Wiafe; Deputy Minister for Roads, Alhassan Suhuyini; and was led by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene.
The Accra–Kumasi Expressway will be a new six-lane dual carriageway linking Accra and Kumasi, Ghana’s two largest cities. The project is expected to significantly reduce travel time, improve road safety, and stimulate economic activities along the corridor.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stressed the importance of timely completion, noting that the expressway would play a critical role in national development and regional integration once delivered.
