NPP decides 2028 flagbearer today

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will today, Saturday, January 31, elect its flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Delegates nationwide will cast their votes in what is considered one of the most significant internal exercises for the party since its defeat in the 2024 general election.

The presidential primary pits five aspirants against one another, including former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Minister of Education Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and businessman Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

An estimated 211,000 delegates from across the party’s constituencies are involved in today’s voting, which is taking place in more than 300 polling centres nationwide.

The election is being closely watched by party members and political analysts alike, as it not only decides the party’s standard-bearer for the next presidential race but also serves as a barometer of internal cohesion and support ahead of 2028.

Months of campaigning, policy debate, and regional tours by the presidential hopefuls have heightened interest in the outcome.

Earlier in January, the five aspirants signed a peace pact committing to accept the results of the primary and to uphold unity within the party regardless of the outcome.

Security measures are in place to ensure a peaceful and credible election, with thousands of police officers deployed to polling stations across the country.
