Temper Justice with Mercy: Health Minister Urges Leniency for Nurse Who Insulted Him

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has appealed to the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to show compassion towards staff nurse Bernice Aboagye, who was recently queried over alleged unprofessional comments made about him on social media.

In a press statement issued and signed by the Ministry’s Spokesperson and Head of Health Training Institutions, Tony Goodman, the Ministry acknowledged the circulation of the query letter on social media and commended the Ghana Health Service for swiftly enforcing its Code of Conduct and professional ethics.

However, Mr Akandoh, while recognising the importance of discipline and professionalism among health workers, has requested that the Service “tempers justice with mercy” in handling the matter. He emphasised that both he and the government remain open to constructive criticism and diverse opinions, viewing them as essential to promoting tolerance and transparency in governance.

“The Minister and the government welcome divergent views and constructive criticism as part of our commitment to fostering openness and dialogue,” the statement noted.

At the same time, Mr Akandoh urged health professionals to express their views responsibly and respectfully, without resorting to insults or offensive language. He noted that such conduct undermines the dignity of the profession and detracts from the collective goal of improving healthcare delivery in the country.

The Ministry also reaffirmed its respect for the constitutional right of citizens to demonstrate or express their frustrations publicly. It, however, cautioned that while demonstrations are legitimate forms of expression, the use of abusive language or acts of indiscipline will not be tolerated.

“The Ministry of Health wishes to emphasise that it has no objection to demonstrations, as they are legitimate expressions of frustration and a constitutional right of every citizen. However, the Ministry will not condone the use of abusive language or acts of indiscipline during such demonstrations.”

The Ministry reminded all health professionals to exercise restraint and decorum in their public communications and social media engagements, emphasising the need to uphold the integrity and ethics of the health profession.
