Twelve individuals have been apprehended for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities that caused extensive damage to portions of the railway line connecting Takoradi, Akyem, and Nsuta in the Western Region.
The arrests were made during a joint operation led by Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson and officers from the National Security Secretariat, according to a report by Graphic Online. The suspects were said to have been caught in the act when the team stormed the site.
Preliminary assessments indicate that approximately three kilometres of the 60-kilometre railway line have been destroyed, disrupting manganese haulage and other operations of the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL).
Authorities have since intensified surveillance in the affected areas to prevent further encroachment and safeguard critical national infrastructure.
