The National Vice Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Sofo Azorka, has been arrested in connection with an alleged assault during the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025.
Alhaji Azorka allegedly attacked Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the Third National Vice Chairman of the largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), during a heated confrontation at the by-election grounds. The incident sparked tensions between supporters of the two rival parties, prompting swift intervention by security personnel.
In a statement, the police said the NDC executive has been directed to report to the Eastern South Regional Police Headquarters in Kyebi on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 10 a.m., where he will be formally charged in court.
“The suspect has been cautioned and released on bail to report to the Regional Command on the said date,” the statement confirmed.
The police further assured the public of an impartial investigation and urged restraint from all parties as the case proceeds.
“We wish to assure the public that thorough investigations will be conducted into the matter. The Ghana Police Service remains resolute in maintaining law and order. We entreat all parties and the general public to remain calm as we continue with our investigations and communicate further developments in due course,” the statement added.
