The Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) has called for enhanced institutional support to aid its work in promoting transparency and accountability in Ghana’s legislature. The appeal was made at the opening of a capacity-building workshop in Accra, where members also expressed appreciation to the Speaker and Clerk of Parliament for their swift backing of the training initiative.
In his opening remarks, the Dean of the PPC, Simon Agianab, urged the leadership of Parliament to consider providing members with monthly allowances to support their work in covering legislative proceedings.
“Let us seize this opportunity to learn, grow, and network. Let us commit together to using our newfound knowledge and skills to promote transparency, accountability, and public trust in our parliamentary democracy.”
“Let me, at this point, make a passionate appeal to you, The Clerk of Parliament, to facilitate a request we made to the Speaker during our swearing-in ceremony, to consider Parliament giving us some monthly allowances to facilitate the work we do in the august House.”
He further commended the Media Relations Directorate for facilitating the workshop, describing it as a “game-changer” that will equip journalists with the tools to better interpret and report on complex parliamentary processes.
“By upscaling our knowledge and deepening our understanding of parliamentary democracy, we will be better equipped to translate the intricacies of parliamentary proceedings into meaningful narratives that ordinary Ghanaians can understand,” he stated.
The two-day workshop will cover best practices, ethical standards, and comparative lessons from other jurisdictions, combining expert presentations with peer learning and practical exercises.
