Togbi Amey Zegu II, Dufia of Alakple, Amey Hlortator, and Fiaga of Kome-Shime, in a bold step aimed at tackling persistent road infrastructural challenges in the Kome area of the Volta Region, have led a high-powered delegation to the Ministry of Roads and Highways in Accra.
The visit, which underscores the rising urgency of development needs in the Kome Traditional Area, saw the delegation engage directly with senior officials at the Department of Feeder Roads, including Director Ing. Samuel Banini and Ing. Nketia. Discussions focused on the deplorable state of roads in the area and the critical need for immediate rehabilitation to improve mobility, especially for fisherfolk and traders who rely on these routes for daily livelihood.
Key among the issues raised was the construction of two new bridges between Alakple Junction and Atito. These proposed bridges are expected to ensure safer passage for residents, curb erosion, and enhance environmental resilience along the corridor. The delegation also stressed the need for grading and resurfacing of the road linking Alakple to Kodzi via Alorbuime, a route that has seen severe deterioration, adversely affecting economic and social activity in several communities.
Following the initial engagement, a sub-delegation met with the Chief Director of the Ministry of Roads. The Chief Director, recognising the gravity of the situation, issued further directives to fast-track interventions in the area.
The advocacy visit, backed by traditional leaders and opinion leaders from Alakple and Fiaxor, is seen as a strong demonstration of community leadership in action, leveraging diplomacy and dialogue to influence policy and deliver development.
Residents of the Kome enclave have since expressed optimism that the Ministry’s commitment will translate into visible and timely improvements on the ground, bringing long-awaited relief and opening up the area to new opportunities.
