Several residents in the Ho Municipality have been rendered homeless following a heavy downpour that lasted for nearly two hours. The intense rainfall, which began unexpectedly, led to significant flooding in multiple communities, leaving homes submerged and properties damaged.
The worst-hit areas include Tsiyikpota, Akpenamawu, Redeem Road, Bankoe, and Agortome, where residents continue to count their losses in the aftermath of the disaster.
Many affected individuals were seen trying to salvage belongings from their inundated homes, while others have been forced to seek temporary shelter with friends and relatives.
Some distressed residents called on the Ho Municipal Assembly and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to intervene urgently. Their primary demand is the desilting of choked gutters in the affected areas, which they believe contributed significantly to the flooding.
“The water had nowhere to go because the gutters are full of debris. If the authorities had cleared them, this would not have happened,” a resident of Akpenamawu lamented.
Another resident from Tsiyikpota added, “We are tired. Every time it rains heavily, our homes get flooded. We are pleading with the Assembly and NADMO to help us.
The residents emphasise that desilting the drains would allow rainwater to flow freely, potentially averting future disasters of this nature.
They are also calling for long-term flood mitigation measures, including proper drainage systems and routine maintenance.
As the rainy season intensifies, the Ho Municipal Assembly and NADMO are under pressure to act swiftly to prevent a recurrence of such devastating incidents.
