Ghana’s Presidency has formally cautioned the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, following a viral video that sparked public outrage.
In the video, Mr. Gyamfi is seen handing out dollar notes to self-styled evangelist, Patricia Asieduaa, popularly known as Mama Pat or Nana Agradaa. The footage, which quickly circulated on social media, drew criticism over perceived misconduct by a public official. A section of the public, including elements from the largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), also took Sammy Gyamfi to the cleaners and called for tough sanctions to be meted out to him.
Following that public backlash, Mr. Gyamfi issued an apology, describing his action as an “unfortunate act of indiscretion.” He was subsequently summoned by the Presidency for questioning.
Addressing the press on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced that the Presidency considers the matter resolved, following the apology and formal caution.
“So in view of that, the Presidency does not believe that any further actions ought to be taken beyond the apology and the caution,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said.
He explained that the Chief of Staff acknowledged Mr. Gyamfi’s remorse and cautioned him to remain mindful of public expectations moving forward.
“The Chief of Staff impressed upon him the importance of aligning his conduct with public sentiment and the standards expected of public servants,” he added.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu noted that while some actions may be acceptable in private life, public officials are held to a higher standard of accountability.
“We are aware that Ghanaians expect high standards in the performance of our duties as public officials. We remain committed to meeting those high standards to ensure that we deliver the best of governance to our people who have been long suffering in the last few years under poor governance.”
Mr. Gyamfi, who recently assumed his role as acting CEO, has pledged to conduct himself in a manner that reflects the responsibilities of public office.
