Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has launched a scathing attack on President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of cloaking authoritarianism in democratic rhetoric.
Speaking at the #SaveTheJudiciary protest led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Monday, May 5, 2025, the Effutu MP said the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo represents a dangerous turn toward autocracy.
“We march today to resist the rise of a new oppressor and an oppressive regime. We march against the one who wears the cloth of democracy but governs with the spirit of dictatorship,” he said to thunderous applause from demonstrators.
The protest began at the Supreme Court and ended at the Jubilee House, where they called for transparency and a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Chief Justice’s suspension.
Afenyo-Markin stressed that the march was not politically driven but rooted in the defence of Ghana’s constitutional order.
“We march not as partisans, but we march because the constitution demands it,” he stated.
