President Mahama Sacks CDS Oppong-Peprah, Other Top Military Chiefs

President John Dramani Mahama has sacked the Chief of Defence Staff, General Thomas Oppong-Peprah.

In a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President & Minister, Government Communications, President Mahama conveyed his appreciation to the outgoing service chiefs for their invaluable contributions to the country’s defense and security landscape.

The statement also announced new appointments within the command structure of the Ghana Armed Forces, naming five senior officers as Acting Service Chiefs.

The appointments, which take effect from March 24, 2025, are pending consultation with the Council of State. The newly appointed officers are:

  1. Acting Chief of Defence Staff – Brigadier General William Agyapong
  2. Acting Chief of Army Staff – Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu
  3. Acting Chief of Naval Staff – Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing
  4. Acting Chief of Air Staff – Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong
  5. Acting Chief of Staff – Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan

President Mahama met with the outgoing Service Chiefs, led by Chief of Defence Staff General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, at the Flagstaff House on Monday afternoon. He expressed his gratitude for their dedicated service to the nation and assured them that their wealth of experience and knowledge would be instrumental as he works to “reset Ghana.”

The President, who also serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, emphasized his commitment to strengthening national security and upholding professionalism within the Armed Forces.
