We don’t handle Black Stars budget – GFA tells President Mahama

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has responded to President John Mahama’s remarks regarding the financial transparency of the Black Stars, stating that the association does not handle the national team’s budget.

During his first State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Mahama emphasized the need for greater transparency in sports administration, particularly in the financial management of national teams. He called for the Black Stars’ budget to be made public as it involves taxpayers’ money.

In an official statement, the GFA clarified that all budgeting and expenditures related to the national teams are exclusively managed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“We also endorse His Excellency’s call for transparency in the budgeting and expenditure related to the Black Stars and, by extension, all national teams,” the statement read.

“As part of our commitment to transparency, the GFA has always provided the Ministry responsible for Sports with the first draft budget for the national teams. Beyond this, everything related to budgeting and expenditure for the Black Stars sits with the Ministry. For emphasis, payments made in relation to the Black Stars are exclusively handled by the Ministry.”

The FA further assured that it supports the President’s call for transparency and will work closely with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to ensure accountability in national team finances.

Ghana’s Black Stars are set to face Chad and Madagascar in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
