The Minority in Parliament on Friday, January 24, 2025, disrupted parliamentary proceedings over the lack of representation for the Ablekuma North constituency.
The chaos which lasted some 30 minutes began shortly after the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, took over proceedings following the presentation of the business statement by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga. The statement outlined parliamentary activities for the upcoming week.
Tensions flared when Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about the omission of issues surrounding the violence in the Ablekuma North parliamentary election from the business statement.
He reminded the House of assurances given by the former Majority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, that these issues would be addressed. Mr Afenyo-Markin also criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Greater Accra Regional Party for their alleged attacks on the Electoral Commission.
The Minority caucus then erupted into chants of “No Ablekuma North, No Government Business,” while banging their tables and displaying placards with various inscriptions. The situation quickly spiralled out of control, prompting the Speaker to suspend sitting to restore order.
After the suspension, Afenyo-Markin called for calm among his colleagues, urging them to cease chanting and allow proceedings to continue. Following his intervention, the business statement was presented without further disruptions.
