Mutawakilu also holds a Commonwealth Executive Master’s in Business Administration from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, an Executive Certificate in Governance and Leadership from the Ghana School of Governance and Leadership, and a BSc in Administration (Accounting Option) from the University of Ghana at the undergraduate level.

Adam Mutawakilu served as the first Member of Parliament for the Damongo Constituency (2013–2020) after the constituency was split to carve out the Daboya-Mankarigu Constituency. In Parliament, he served on the Mines and Energy Committee and rose to become the Vice Chairman and the Ranking Member of the Committee. Under his leadership as the Ranking Member of the Mines and Energy Committee, he and his colleagues on the Minority side exposed the botched Ameri Novation Agreement, which eventually led to Boakye Agyarko losing his position as the Minister for Energy. He was also a member of the Committee of Members Holding Office of Profit.
Mutawakilu served as the District Chief Executive for the West Gonja District between 2009 and 2013. He assumed this position after working with the University for Development Studies Central Administration as Head of Treasury.
He is a professional teacher with a science background. He taught Core Science, Mathematics, and Chemistry at Damongo Senior High School from 1996 to 1999 after earning a Teacher Training Certificate “A” from Bagabaga Training College in 1996. In 1999, he was also engaged by Bagabaga Training College as a part-time Chemistry teacher.

Adam Mutawakilu also worked with the West Gonja District Hospital (then) as a Laboratory Technician.
