An attack on the Ada Songhor Electrochem Ghana Limited in the Greater Accra Region by unidentified individuals has brought the company’s operations to a standstill.
In the early hours of Thursday, January 9, 2025, over 350 youth allegedly stormed the company’s warehouse, sites, and offices, stealing valuable equipment and products, including pumps, motorbikes, car tyres, and finished salt products. The assailants also vandalized trucks and other property.
Confirming the incident to the Parliamentary Press Corps during a site visit on Friday, the Ada Divisional Police Commander, ACP Joseph Atsu Dzineku, revealed that investigations were underway to track down the perpetrators. However, no arrests had been made at the time of reporting.
Witnesses stated that the attackers forcibly seized mobile phones from workers on duty, compelling them to vacate the premises.
Nene Ode-Opio Siada, Operations Manager of Electrochem Ghana Limited, lamented the extensive damage caused to the facility.
“The company has been hit hard. This is a severe blow to us.”
“CCTV footage captured the large number of individuals involved in the attack.”
Electrochem Ghana Limited has strongly condemned the attack, which the company claims was carried out by individuals allegedly affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement signed by Chief Executive Officer Abdul Razak Adam, the company detailed the destruction and theft, revealing that several staff members sustained injuries during the chaos.
“…This brazen attack is not an isolated incident but part of a disturbing trend that poses a great threat to the safety and security of our employees and the integrity of our operations.”
“The assailants wreaked havoc on our premises, stealing essential office supplies and a significant quantity of our salt product from the warehouse.”
The company called for immediate investigations to ensure the perpetrators face the full rigours of the law.
Residents of Boni-Kope in the Ada West Municipality, who have witnessed recurring attacks, have also appealed for military protection. They claim previous reports to the police have yielded no results, leaving them vulnerable to further violence.
Electrochem Ghana warned that such lawlessness undermines investor confidence.
“More alarmingly, some of our staff members sustained injuries during the chaos, underscoring the urgent need for protective measures and accountability.”
“…Such lawlessness undermines the investment climate in our region and threatens the trust we have cultivated with both local and international investors who have committed substantial resources to our endeavours,” it said.
The company has vowed to pursue justice and called for measures to prevent future occurrences.
