The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the North Gonja District has organized a forum to promote peaceful elections and civic engagement among youth activists in the Daboya-Mankarigu constituency.
The event, held at the Assembly of God Church, was sponsored by the European Union (EU) under the “Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism (PCVE)” initiative in Northern Ghana. The forum comes as Ghana prepares for the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at the gathering, the NCCE Director for North Gonja, Mr Matthew Dute, called on the youth to prioritize peaceful and democratic elections over monetary influence.
“Engaging in electoral violence because of money is a destructive path that undermines democracy, human rights, and social cohesion. Avoid it,” Mr. Dute advised.
The Savannah Regional NCCE Accountant, Mr Hafiz Mohammed, also cautioned against spreading false information about political parties on social media. He emphasized the importance of media literacy, fact-checking, and critical thinking as tools to combat misinformation and foster a more informed and peaceful electoral process.
The Chairman of the event, Chief Peter Jantong Wura, urged the youth to promote peace, tolerance, and respect during elections and reminded them of their responsibility to safeguard democracy for future generations.
The engagement is part of the NCCE’s efforts to provide young activists with a platform to participate in decision-making processes, ensuring their voices are heard while discouraging involvement in electoral violence.
