Parliament is set to reconvene today, Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC). This meeting comes amid a heated standoff between the NPP and the NDC Caucus over which side is the Majority in the House.
The impasse was triggered when Speaker Bagbin declared four parliamentary seats — Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West — vacant. This move sparked intense backlash from the NPP caucus, who argued that it undermined their representation and disrupted the balance of power in Parliament.
In response, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin filed a legal challenge with the Supreme Court, questioning the Speaker’s authority to declare the seats vacant. The Supreme Court’s subsequent intervention, issuing a stay on Bagbin’s ruling has only fueled tensions between the two caucuses.
The turmoil escalated further when, after the declaration by the Speaker, the NDC caucus occupied the Majority side of the chamber in a symbolic move that led Speaker Bagbin to adjourn the House indefinitely.
The Majority caucus, pressing for a quick resolution, called for Parliament to reconvene, citing the need to resume legislative business and address pressing national issues that have been stalled due to the impasse.
