The Member of Parliament for the Akim Swedru Constituency in the Eastern Region, Kennedy Nyarko Osei has called on Ghanaians to deliver a decisive vote for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 general elections.
According to him, voting for the NPP candidate is essential to preserving the flagship “Free SHS” policy, which has benefited many families across the country.
Mr Nyarko Osei accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its leader, former President John Dramani Mahama, of planning to abolish the Free SHS policy if they return to power. He urged voters to prevent this by ensuring a victory for Dr Bawumia in December.
“The Free SHS policy would be vigorously expanded under President Bawumia. Ghanaians can be assured of that,” he said, pointing to the NDC’s past criticisms of the policy. “Unless you vote for Bawumia to stop them, the NDC is planning to abolish or cancel Free SHS. That’s possible,” the MP wrote on his official Facebook page.
He also stressed on the importance of the policy to many underprivileged families, urging parents and young adults to consider the future of Free SHS when casting their ballots.
“A vote for Dr Bawumia means safeguarding Free SHS for many poor Ghanaian families,” Osei Nyarko added.
The MP criticized former President Mahama for previously opposing the Free SHS initiative, recalling how the NDC ran over 40 advertisements against the policy. He questioned the credibility of Mahama’s recent pledge to continue Free SHS if re-elected, arguing that Mahama’s past actions—such as cancelling trainee allowances—make him untrustworthy on this issue.
“Should Ghanaians replace the man who dreamed, believed in, and delivered Free SHS with someone who never believed in it and fought against it?” Osei Nyarko asked. He cast doubt on Mahama’s ability to fund the policy, citing the NDC’s history of criticizing it.
Osei Nyarko reiterated that the NPP has fulfilled its promises and urged Ghanaians not to fall for the “lies and deceit” of their political opponents. He emphasized the NPP’s strong track record and commitment to maintaining key policies like Free SHS.
