The Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, is being unveiled as the running mate of the NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia today, Tuesday, July 9 2024.
The unveiling ceremony is taking place in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, a traditional stronghold of the NPP. This comes after he was officially introduced to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II amid pomp and pageantry.
On Friday, July 5, the National Council of the NPP formally endorsed NAPO as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate. The decision has received widespread acclaim from top party officials, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who has expressed confidence in the duo’s ability to lead the party to victory in the 2024 general elections.
The NPP has mounted a robust defence of NAPO, dismissing criticisms of his perceived arrogance. In response to the backlash, some stakeholders have suggested that NAPO use prepared scripts for future public appearances to help manage his messaging and mitigate potential gaffes.
The event has attracted key figures within the party, including President Akufo-Addo, the Council of Elders, Members of Parliament, and other notable members.
As the stage is set for a fiercely contested presidential election in 2024, the NPP’s duo of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) will face off against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket, comprising former President John Dramani Mahama and Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
