Savannah Region: NCCE Hosts Police-Community Dialogue in Daboya

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) North Gonja Directorate has organized a Police-Community Dialogue in Daboya on Friday, July 5th, 2024. The event aimed to foster positive relationships and reduce tension between the Ghana Police Service and the civilian community.

The dialogue session, part of the European Union (EU) funded project “Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism Action in the Northern Regions of Ghana (PCVE),” brought together various stakeholders.

Mr. Mathew Dute, the North Gonja District Director of NCCE, emphasized the importance of cooperation between community members and the police to address underlying issues contributing to crime.

“Dealing with extremism requires collaboration and cooperation from all stakeholders. By adopting inclusive leadership practices, we can build resilient communities that reject violence and extremism, fostering a more peaceful and harmonious society,” Mr Dute stated.

Mr. Issaka Zitor, the Savannah Regional NCCE Director and guest of honour, urged the residents of North Gonja to support the Ghana Police Service. He noted that such support strengthens democracy and promotes a culture of civic engagement and participation in public safety.

“Engaging in dialogue allows communities and police to work together to prevent violence and extremism, creating safer and more harmonious communities,” Mr Zitor emphasized.

In response to community concerns, Kwaku Dei Samuel, the Daboya Police Commander, reassured that the police are there to serve the populace and not to oppress them. He encouraged community members to view the police as friends.

“Collaborative problem-solving becomes easier when community members and police have a friendly relationship. When community members view police as friends, they’re more likely to report crimes and provide valuable information,” Mr. Samuel noted.

The event was attended by political party leaders, community members, representatives of the Ghana Ambulance Service, and members of the Ghana National Fire Service.
