The National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Council of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) are set to hold crunch meetings later today, July 4, 2024.
The meeting with the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is to discuss his choice of running mate ahead of the December 7 general elections. The meetings will be held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.
Dr. Bawumia is expected to present and defend his selection of Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the current Energy Minister and MP for Manhyia South, as his running mate. This meeting aligns with the NPP’s constitutional requirements.

“In our party’s constitution, Article 13 is quite clear that whoever the nominee is, whoever you intend to present as a running mate, you must do so in consultation with the National Council. So he [Bawumia] is presenting before the National Council the MP for Manhyia South and Minister for Energy, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh [as his running mate],” National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye told Accra-based Citi News.
Dr. Bawumia’s choice follows an earlier meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on June 25, during which they discussed the selection of Dr. Opoku Prempeh. Following this, Dr Bawumia formally informed the NPP’s leadership and the Parliament’s Majority caucus of his decision.
The nomination of Dr. Opoku Prempeh has elicited mixed reactions within and outside the NPP. While some praise the choice, others have expressed opposition to his selection.
