The Leader of the Movement for Change, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen has committed to running a lean government with only 40 ministers, alongside a suite of innovative solutions to tackle the country’s current challenges.
In an event on Monday, June 24, 2024, to unveil his Great Transformational Plan, the former Trade Minister assured supporters that his administration would consist of no more than 40 ministers if elected.
“I will reduce the current size of government and run a lean executive administration consisting of not more than 40 ministers”, he said.
“Eliminate soul sourcing in public procurement and contracting to ensure value for money” according to Alan will inform one of the cardinal means to eliminating corruption within government public procurement.”
Regarding governance reforms, Kyerematen proposed amendments to the 1992 Constitution, including extending the presidential tenure to allow more time for development. He also suggested abolishing the Council of State to make way for a second parliamentary chamber.
“I will abolish the Council of State and establish a new second chamber of Parliament with representation from key stakeholders including the faith-based organizations, traditional authorities, professional bodies, artisanal associations, gender-based organizations, private sector, labour unions and people with disability” arguing this would allow for a proper representation of interest groups in the decision making of the country.”
As the December 7 general elections approach, political parties are competing to propose the leanest government. The opposition NDC has pledged to govern with just 60 ministers, while Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to operate with 50 ministers.
