George Darko: Highlife Icon and ‘King of Burger Music’ Reported Dead

A highlife icon and ‘King of Burger Music’, George Darko has reportedly passed on.

The renowned musician was reported dead in the early hours of Wednesday, March 20, 2024, after a brief illness.

Until his demise, Mr. Darko held the title of Tufuhene of Akropong, bearing the stool name Nana Apem Darko I.

As a guitarist, vocalist, composer, and songwriter, George Darko made an indelible mark on the music scene, captivating audiences since the late 1960s. His contributions to Ghanaian music spanned decades, with his songs from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s remaining timeless classics in the country’s musical heritage.

The Ghana music industry faces yet another significant loss with the passing of legendary Highlife musician, George Darko, following closely on the heels of KK Kabobo’s demise.

Hailing from Akropong in the Eastern Region of Ghana, George Darko’s musical journey began in his youth, initially immersed in traditional dancing and drumming. However, a serendipitous encounter with a teacher who crafted his own guitar ignited Darko’s passion for the instrument.

Influenced by iconic Western bands like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix, he blended contemporary elements with the rich tradition of Highlife music.

His debut solo cassette, “The Reborn Avengers,” showcased his innovative guitar techniques and earned him widespread acclaim.

Venturing to Germany, Darko played a pivotal role in forming the Bus Stop Band, where he emerged as the lead vocalist, contributing significantly to their success.

Following the band’s disbandment in 1988, Darko embarked on a solo career, captivating audiences with his electrifying performances. Hits like “Akoo Te Brofo,” “Obi Abayewa,” “Odo Colour,” “Highlife Time,” and “Medo Menuanom” cemented his legacy in Ghanaian music.

Darko’s contributions have been immortalized in compilations such as the revered “Kings of Highlife” album, solidifying his status as a true luminary in the Highlife genre.
