RAINS Introduces Chamber of Women in Construction for Gender Equity in TVET Sector

RAINS has unveiled the “Chamber of Women in Construction”, a network of women dedicated to advancing gender equity within the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector.

With a focus on promoting gender balance, this practitioner-led association unites women in blue-collar roles, challenging traditional norms that have confined such jobs to men. The initiative also aims to inspire and support young women to pursue careers in sectors traditionally dominated by men.

At the launch event, participants shared their experiences, highlighting the opportunities and challenges women encounter in the construction industry. The message was clear; empowering women in blue-collar jobs is crucial for breaking stereotypes.

Hajia Mariam Iddrisu, the Executive Director of Girls to Women Foundation and esteemed Chairperson, has played a pivotal role in advocating for gender diversity. Her leadership establishes a strong foundation for the association’s objectives.

Prof Adiza Sadik, a lecturer at the Tamale Technical University, who was the keynote speaker, urged women to challenge gender roles in the TVET sector. Among the panellists was Madam Marie Vanderpuye, the team lead for Youth Challenge International.

The “Chamber of Women In Construction” is not merely an association; it’s a movement reshaping perceptions and fostering inclusivity within the construction industry. Uniting women in blue-collar roles aims to empower their contributions and inspire the next generation of female professionals.

The launch featured various distinguished guests advocating for gender equality in the TVET sector. As the association gains momentum, it is poised to break barriers and promote a more diverse and inclusive workforce.

More than an association, the Chamber of Women in Construction is a beacon of change, signalling a shift toward a more equitable and inclusive future for women in the construction industry.
