Loyalists of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia have taken over the government of President Akufo-Addo.
The Veep who was elected NPP flagbearer in 2024 finally took over the leadership role of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo after 16 years of tenure.
The big Valentine’s gift which came in the form of a Ministerial reshuffle saw close associates of the NPP 2024 Presidential candidate being rewarded juicy portfolios.
Ken Ofori-Atta, the Minister of Finance who had survived numerous calls and moves to yank him from his position, couldn’t survive this time round, as he was axed for Karaga MP and Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam.
Since October 2022, President Akufo-Addo has consistently defended his cousin stating there was no basis for his dismissal and praising his performance. Despite NPP MPs joining the calls for Ofori-Atta to resign, the President failed to do the needful.
Another Bawumia darling girl and current Deputy Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar has been elevated to the position of substantive Minister and replaces Kojo Oppong Nkrumah who has been reassigned to the Works and Housing Ministry.
Among the changes, Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu will be succeeded by Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, the current CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
Additionally, Interior Minister Ambrose Dery will make way for Henry Quartey, the current Greater Accra Regional Minister.
Titus Glover, a former Member of Parliament for Tema East, is set to assume the role of Greater Accra Regional Minister, while Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, will take over from Dan Botwe.
In other moves, Asenso Boakye, the Minister for Works and Housing, will assume the responsibilities of the Ministry of Road and Highways previously held by Kwasi Amoako-Atta.
Ophelia Hayford, MP for Mfantseman, is set to take over the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI) from Dr Kwaku Afriyie.
Lydia Seyram Alhassan, Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, has been named the new Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, succeeding Freda Prempeh.
Additionally, Dakoa Newman, Okaikwei South Member of Parliament, is set to replace Lariba Zuweira Abudu as Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection.
