Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed his deep disappointment with President Akufo-Addo, asserting that the President has not lived up to expectations.
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe, speaking at a press conference titled “The State of Ghana Today” on October 11, emphasized that the President he had engaged with and the one currently in office appear to be significantly different.
He specifically accused the President of overseeing what he referred to as “wanton corruption and nepotism,” despite Akufo-Addo’s previous stance against corruption.
The former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President highlighted the need for urgent attention to address these issues, stating that they could potentially threaten the nation’s security.
“These are critical warning signs going to destroy the security of the state. We need to pay critical attention to this.”
“The Akufo-Addo I knew and had numerous dialogues and demonstrations with is not the Akufo-Addo who is now president.”
Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe raised concerns about government appointees allegedly hoarding large sums of money in their homes, stressing that failure to address this could lead to serious consequences.
Moreover, he expressed the concerns of the youth in Ghana, emphasizing that they are discontented with the current state of affairs in the country. He called attention to issues such as perceived corruption, tribalism, nepotism, and the interests of political public officeholders.
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe questioned how government ministers could accumulate wealth, and acquire luxurious properties and vehicles while many young people in Ghana struggle to find meaningful employment.
“In the old age of ours, we don’t sleep soundly at night. Ghana has been riddled with perceived corruption of political public office holders amassing unexplained wealth, tribalism, nepotism and parochial in their interest, especially under this regime under President Akufo-Addo.”
“How do Ministers hoard stashes of cash in foreign and local currencies in their homes, acquire properties in prime areas of Accra and other parts of the country, drive the most luxurious cars and live extravagantly and expect our youth who remain largely without meaningful employment to be satisfied.”
Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe also called on the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, to heed the demands of the Minority in Parliament and resign. Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe raised concerns about what he perceived as disrespect shown by the Governor to protestors, emphasizing that incompetence and inefficiency should not be tolerated in public office.
“We have noticed with grave concern, the clear disrespect shown by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana to protestors led by the Minority in Parliament and many aggrieved Ghanaians. It cannot be true that the ‘OCCUPY BOG’ demonstrators were solely on any political agenda when they were joined in the March by other well-meaning Ghanaians to show their indignation against actions taken that have led to losses to the taxpayer.”
“Incompetence and inefficiencies should not be condoned in public office as far as the output of such officers impoverishes ordinary Ghanaians. If you can’t do the work, resign. It is that simple.”
