Publish names and photos of EC officers for limited voter registration exercise – Mahama to Jean Mensa

Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to publish the names and photos of officers to be used for the limited voter registration exercise.

According to him, the publication ought to be done at the district level as stipulated by the EC’s own regulations.

During a Facebook Live session on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, the NDC 2024 flagbearer also called for the decentralisation of the upcoming exercise in order to facilitate the participation of more eligible Ghanaians.

Mahama emphasized the importance of conducting the limited voter registration exercise without bias or interference to ensure that the upcoming elections are free and fair. He stressed that it is the EC’s responsibility to uphold democratic principles and maintain transparency and credibility in the electoral process.

“Access to a voter ID card should be easy and not limited by location. Every Ghanaian deserves a chance to exercise his democratic right. I strongly urge the Electoral Commission to facilitate the registration exercise in all its electoral areas to allow for easy access, and reduce the burden on the citizenry in their quest to register.”

Mahama also called on the EC to disclose when it plans to make the names and pictures of personnel recruited for the registration exercise public, as required by the electoral management body’s regulations.

“I challenge the EC to be more transparent in the processes preceding the limited voter registration exercise, the replacement of Voter ID cards and the transfer of votes. As has been made in a formal letter to the EC by the general secretary of the NDC, we want to know when the names and photos of the registration supervisors, registration officers, registration assistant and other officials for the registration exercise will be published at the district level as stipulated by the EC regulations.”

In addition to advocating for decentralization and transparency, Mahama highlighted the significance of the upcoming 2024 elections as an opportunity for Ghanaians to vote for change.

He emphasized the need to vote out the incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government, arguing that a change in leadership is necessary to address the economic challenges facing the country.
