The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), University of Ghana branch, has elected Professor Ransford Gyampo, a distinguished Professor of Political Science at the tertiary institution, as its new President.
The astute academic secured a remarkable 93.3 per cent of the total votes cast during the elections held on Thursday, August 15, 2023.
Having previously served as the immediate past General Secretary and having held the position of Director at the Centre for European Studies at the University of Ghana, Professor Gyampo’s ascendancy to the UTAG-UG Chapter presidency marks a significant milestone in his academic and administrative career.
Taking to his social media handles shortly after the close of polls, an elated Prof. Gyampo expressed heartfelt gratitude to his colleague lecturers for entrusting him with this honour. He also extended his appreciation to the student body for their unwavering support, as well as to all well-wishers who stood by him.
Sharing his victory, Prof. Gyampo stated, I have just won my election as President of UTAG (UG) with 93.3 per cent of the total valid votes cast……Thanks to you all for the well wishes; thanks to all my colleague lecturers for the confidence they have shown in me and thanks to my students who were relentless in their support for me.”
The Professor, known for his vocal stance on national issues, addressed the inevitable challenges that come with leadership, noting, “In the driving seat myself, I’ll champion the interest of my people forcefully and proactively. I lost some friends as General Secretary and I do not mind losing more as I fight harder for the University Teacher in my capacity as President.”
“It won’t be out of malice or hatred for any regime. It would be just for the advancement of the interest of my people.”
“Let the powers that be, take note of this: with me as UTAG President, we wouldn’t like to fight but we wouldn’t hate to fight, regardless of how protracted it could be.“
