The standby force of the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) has reiterated its commitment to restore constitutional order in Niger should diplomatic engagements fail.
According to Abdel-Fatau Musah, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, calls urging a revocation of the decision for military action is unjustifiable.
Speaking at the Extraordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff held in Accra, Ambassador Musah strongly defended the regional body’s position regarding military intervention in Niger and emphasized the seriousness of the situation.
He also added that the purpose of the meeting was to strategically outline an intervention plan for Niger, pending the approval of ECOWAS leaders.
Ambassador Musah underscored that if ongoing diplomatic efforts fail to produce results, the standby force is prepared to take resolute action.
“Let no one be in doubt that if everything fails, the valiant forces of West Africa, both the Military and Civilian components are ready to answer the call of duty. Your valiance has been demonstrated time and time again,” Ambassador Musah said.
He added that “by all means, available constitutional order will be restored in the country.”
Ambassador Musah affirmed that ECOWAS’s dedication mirrors its commitment to upholding democratic principles and safeguarding the political landscape of the region.
Abdel-Fatau Musah also shed light on the robust capabilities at ECOWAS’s disposal to address the situation in Niger.
He revealed that the regional body possesses ample resources and capacities to effectively counter the disruptions caused by the Niger junta and to work toward the reestablishment of democratic governance in the country.
