The Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has commissioned the newly constructed Sehwi Akontombra District Hospital in the Western North Region, signalling a significant step in improving access to quality healthcare in the area. The hospital project, which commenced in 2018, boasts modern facilities such as an outpatient department, a theatre, well-equipped hospital beds, male and female wards, a psychiatric unit, public health services, an x-ray facility, a dispensary, and consulting rooms, among other administrative units.
The commissioning ceremony brought together esteemed public office holders, including the Health Minister, Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Manu; the Director-General of Ghana Health Services, Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye; Nana Ayew Afriyie, Chairperson of the parliamentary select committee on Health, leaders of the Sehwi Wiawso traditional council, healthcare practitioners, and residents of Sehwi Akontombra.
Addressing the gathering, Vice President Bawumia emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare access nationwide. He highlighted significant initiatives, such as the introduction of 300 ambulances to every constituency and the drone medical delivery system, aimed at improving healthcare services across the country.
He further mentioned the ambitious Agenda 111, a project that aims to provide healthcare services to citizens’ doorsteps, emphasizing that it is unprecedented in Ghana’s history. The Vice President assured that construction of similar hospitals, including those in Sehwi Bodi, Suaman Dadieso, and Bia East, all in the Western North Region, is underway.
Vice President Bawumia disclosed that the government has planned to complete between 14 and 45 Agenda 111 projects in 2023, with the remaining to be finalized in 2024.
On his part, Health Minister Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Manu highlighted that the commissioning of the Sehwi Akontombra District Hospital aligns with President Akufo-Addo’s vision of achieving universal health coverage in the country. This hospital, along with six other district hospitals, demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing accessible healthcare services to communities.
The Member of Parliament for Sehwi Akontombra, Alex Djornuboah Tetteh, lauded the government for the remarkable and unprecedented development in the area since the NPP came into power in 2016. He urged the hospital’s staff to work diligently to ensure residents in the area benefit from the facility and maintain a high level of maintenance to preserve its longevity.
Chief of Sehwi Akontombra, Nana Kwabena Ebi II, commended President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia for establishing a well-equipped hospital in his community. He expressed gratitude for the NPP’s love and commitment to the Sehwi Akontombra district.
The commissioning of the Sehwi Akontombra District Hospital marks a significant stride in improving healthcare infrastructure and services in the Western North Region, contributing to the government’s efforts to ensure quality healthcare access for all Ghanaians.
