Tension erupted in the Asokore Mampong Municipality in the Ashanti Region as angry youth attacked the Asawase Police station in response to the death of a young man.
According to information obtained by Accra-based Citi News, the youth alleged that the deceased was manhandled by police officers during a swoop at a hideout, leading to his untimely demise.
In a display of fury, the youth stormed the Asawase police station, pelting stones and causing damage to the building and its properties. The situation became intense enough to render the police station off the grid due to the damage inflicted on the meter.
Gideon Okai, the Assembly Member for Asawase West Electoral Area, who witnessed the incident, narrated, “The Asawase police station is opposite my house, so I heard a group of guys throwing stones into the station. So, I called the police patrol officer to come and make sure that things are calm here. When you enter the police station you can see a lot of damage. The reason is that they are accusing the police of killing their friend.”
He further mentioned that some of the police officers refuted the accusation, claiming that the young man’s death was not caused by their actions. However, the enraged youth persisted in their allegations, leading to a retaliatory attack on the police station.
In response to the escalating situation, a heavy police deployment has been sent to the area to maintain order and prevent any further escalation of violence.
