Parliament sets up 7-member ad-hoc committee to probe IGP leaked tape saga

Ghana’s parliament has set up a seven (7) member ad-hoc committee to probe the IGP leaked tape saga.

The special committee will comprise three (3) MPs each from the Majority and Minority caucuses of the House, as well as a technical expert. This committee would be tasked with investigating the leaked audio recording that allegedly outlines plans to remove the Inspector General of Police clandestinely.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, announced the move on Thursday, expressing his expectation to receive the names of the committee members within one week.

The leaked audio, which reportedly originated from a conversation between a senior police officer and individuals believed to be affiliated with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has generated significant controversy.

The leaked recording details plans to oust the current Inspector General of Police, DDrGeorge Akuffo Dampare, in favour of someone more sympathetic to the ruling party’s cause. As suggested in the recording, the objective is to secure police support for rigging the 2024 elections in favour of the NPP.

Members of the Minority caucus in Parliament have strongly protested against the alleged plot and have called for a forensic investigation to verify the authenticity of the recording.

As the highest legislative body in the country, Parliament is deemed the appropriate institution to undertake this investigation, reflecting its commitment to upholding the principles of justice, transparency, and the rule of law.

Both lawmakers and the public will eagerly anticipate the outcome of the investigation by the ad-hoc Committee, as it holds the potential to reveal critical insights into the alleged plot and restore trust in the integrity of Ghana’s democratic processes.
