Gyakye Quayson trial: Traditional leaders in Assin North join calls for AG to discontinue case

Traditional leaders in the Assin North Constituency of the Central Region have made a passionate appeal to President Nana Akufo-Addo and Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame to drop the criminal charges against their Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson.

The timing of their call coincided with the swearing-in ceremony of the new MP, James Gyakye Quayson, which took place in parliament on Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

Speaking to the media after the momentous ceremony, Nanahemaa Afia Ntiamoah, the Queen mother of Assin Bereku, emphasized the importance of unity and the need to prioritize national development now that the by-election is behind them. She expressed concerns that the ongoing court battles could hamper the progress and development of the people in Assin North and pleaded with the President and the Attorney General to halt that trial.

‘Fa ne fom’: Here’s how Gyakye Quayson celebrated his “epic” swearing-in

“Right now, we have elected Mr Quayson to represent us in Parliament, and so we plead with the President and the Attorney General to halt the ongoing prosecution of Gyakye Quayson,” she appealed.

Queen Mother Ntiamoah also echoed the sentiment that the landslide victory achieved in the by-election indicates the strong support and love the people of Assin North have for their elected representative.

Adding his voice to the appeal, Nana Tufuhene Frimpong Baah, the Assin Brereku Tsidomhene I, urged President Akufo-Addo and government officials to move past the disagreements of the past and embrace unity and peace. He emphasized that had the NPP candidate, Charles Opoku, emerged as the winner of the by-election, the people of Assin North would have supported him. He urged the same level of support to be extended to Gyakye Quayson.

Nana Tufuhene Frimpong Baah pleaded with the government to find a resolution to the ongoing court case, recognizing the importance of addressing the situation in a manner that promotes harmony and unity among the constituents.
