‘Fa ne fom’: Here’s how Gyakye Quayson celebrated his “epic” swearing-in

The newly elected Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson brought life to the chamber of Parliament on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, moments after his swearing-in.

Gyakye Quayson, the newly sworn-in MP, celebrated his “epic” swearing-in ceremony in a jubilant and spirited manner, capturing the joy and excitement of the moment.

The phrase “Fa ne fom,” which was his signature tune during the heat of the campaign for last Tuesday’s by-election echoed throughout the celebratory atmosphere as supporters and well-wishers joined him in marking this significant milestone.

While being ushered back to his seat after another round of swearing-in, the MP received a resounding round of cheers from his colleague MPs.

With the cheers growing ever louder from the chamber and the fully packed public gallery, the “Fa ne fom” chant rang through from sympathisers and well-wishers, who were all clad in white.

As if on cue, the newly sworn-in MP, who some two years ago, had undergone the same swearing-in rites, swiftly bent down and scooped the air with his hand, to live the ‘fa ne fom’ phrase which translates to picking something from the ground.

The new NDC MP had to be sworn in again after the Supreme Court ordered Parliament to expunge his name from its records as an MP.

The move necessitated a by-election which saw Gyakye Quayson secure a resounding victory.

Despite facing a criminal trial over the dual citizenship allegations that led to the loss of his seat, Mr Quayson secured a wider margin of victory with 17,245 votes, representing 57.56% of valid votes.

The NPP’s Charles Opoku received 12,630 votes or 42.15% of valid votes to secure the second position, while Bernice Enam Sefanu of the Liberal Party of Ghana obtained only 87 votes or 0.29%.

Tuesday’s ceremony was witnessed by a high-powered delegation from the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by former President Mahama, 2020 NDC running, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, NDC National Chair, Johnson Asiedu Nketia and General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey among others.

Some dignitaries including religious and traditional leaders from the Assin North constituency were also in their numbers to give moral support to their kinsman.
