IGP leaked tape saga: Bugri Naabu came here to lie – COP Mensah tells parliamentary committee

COP George Alex Mensah, one of the security chiefs implicated in the alleged plot to remove the Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has firmly rejected the claims made by the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu.

COP Mensah insists that Bugri Naabu lied while testifying before the ad-hoc parliamentary committee investigating the matter.

During his appearance before the committee, Bugri Naabu confirmed the authenticity of the controversial leaked tape and revealed that he had enlisted someone to record the conversation. This confirmation was made on Monday, August 28, 2023.

But appearing before the committee, COP Mensah openly challenged Bugri Naabu’s assertions, stating, “Bugri Naabu came here to lie.”

Additionally, Mensah contested the credibility of the tape, asserting that it had been manipulated and did not accurately reflect the original conversation he had with the former NPP Northern Regional Chairman.

Mensah explained that he could not vouch for various details presented in the tape and categorically denied any plot to remove the Inspector General of Police.

In a direct exchange with Committee Chairman Samuel Atta Akyea, Mensah emphasized, “This tape that was played today, to me was an edited tape, I have not heard any unedited tape for me to talk about as I sit here. The tape that I heard today, there are so many things in that tape that I don’t remember and there are so many things that we discussed that are not on the tape.”

“I’ve met Bugri Naabu four times, and we have discussed many things some of them private things that I am not ready to discuss in public. I had a meeting with Bugri Naabu, but I don’t remember having any plan to remove the IGP because I don’t remove the IGP.”

These statements from COP Mensah contradict Bugri Naabu’s testimony and further deepen the controversy surrounding the leaked tape and the alleged plot against IGP Dampare.
