The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has rejected claims that the Office of the President directed it to withhold data on river turbidity and pollution levels.
This follows claims by Accra-based Joy News journalist Evans Mensah that he was denied information during an attempted visit to the Kwanyako treatment plant due to the directive against releasing such data.
In a statement, however, the company said its official records show that the journalist did not visit the Kwanyako plant.
GWL explained that its mandate is to treat raw water and supply potable water to urban populations under the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.
The company said it conducts internal turbidity tests as part of its water treatment processes and shuts down plants when turbidity levels exceed safe thresholds.
It said the responsibility for managing and monitoring river bodies, as well as holding turbidity data, rests with the Water Resources Commission (WRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
“It is therefore totally untrue that the Presidency has directed GWL to withhold river turbidity data,” the company said.
