ADANU Donates 115 Hybrid Fruit Tree Seedlings to Alakple School to Promote Climate Action and Nutrition

The Alakple Roman Catholic Basic School in the Anloga District of the Volta Region has received 115 hybrid fruit tree seedlings and a range of farming tools from the non-governmental organisation ADANU to support environmental conservation, climate change education and improved nutrition for school children and the wider community.

The donation, led by the Project Coordinator of ADANU, Jerry John Kotoka, forms part of the organisation’s commitment to promoting sustainable environmental practices while encouraging school children to embrace agriculture and climate action.

The hybrid fruit tree seedlings distributed included 20 mango, 20 orange, 20 pear, 20 guava, 20 coconut and 15 cashew seedlings, bringing the total number of seedlings to 115.

In addition to the seedlings, the organisation presented five cutlasses, five watering cans, three pickaxes, three shovels, one bag of NPK fertiliser and one litre of Dursban to support the planting and maintenance of the trees.

Addressing students during the presentation, Mr. Kotoka, together with ADANU volunteers, highlighted the importance of environmental conservation, stressing that the survival of humanity is closely linked to a healthy environment.

He stated that the effects of climate change continue to threaten livelihoods and ecosystems across the world and warned that unless urgent action is taken, life on Earth would become increasingly difficult for all living things.

Mr. Kotoka therefore encouraged the students to take climate change seriously by becoming ambassadors for climate change adaptation and mitigation in their homes and communities.

He also urged the students to nurture the seedlings to maturity and ensure they are well maintained. According to him, the fruit trees will, in the coming years, produce abundant fruits that will help supplement the nutritional needs of school children and residents of the Alakple community while contributing to a cleaner and greener environment.

Mr. Kotoka said the initiative is intended not only to increase access to nutritious fruits but also to instil in the children a sense of responsibility, environmental stewardship and practical agricultural skills.

He expressed confidence that the project aligns with Alakple’s ongoing tree-planting initiative and would leave a lasting impact on both the school and the community.
