Residents and businesses in the Tema Metropolis and several parts of Accra are facing a temporary disruption in water supply following a major burst on a 42-inch transmission pipeline, the Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced.
The interruption affects the entire Tema Metropolis and parts of Accra, including Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, parts of East Legon, Nungua, Teshie, and surrounding communities.
In a statement issued on Monday, January 19, 2026, GWL explained that the burst occurred on a critical transmission line serving the eastern corridor of Accra, resulting in widespread disruption to water distribution.
According to the utility provider, engineers and technical teams were immediately deployed after the fault was detected and are working around the clock to repair the damaged pipeline.

GWL noted that the size of the transmission main and the technical complexity of the repair require careful handling to ensure safety, durability and efficiency.
The company assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to complete the repair works as quickly as possible and restore the water supply.

GWL has also advised essential service providers, including schools and health facilities, to contact the company for support during the period of interruption.
“Water supply will be restored immediately after the repair works are completed,” the statement said.
