The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared Professor Alidu Mahama Seidu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the duly elected Member of Parliament for Tamale Central.
His election follows his emergence as the only candidate in the by-election, held to fill the vacant seat left by the late Dr Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who tragically died in a helicopter crash nearly two months ago.
Announcing the decision, the Returning Officer for the constituency, Muniru Musah, explained that the declaration was made in accordance with Constitutional Instrument (CI) 127.
“As it stands, only Prof. Alidu Seidu Mahama stands nominated, and according to CI 127, he shall be declared elected,” Mr Musah affirmed.
Three aspirants initially filed to contest the seat, including Prof. Seidu, the People’s National Convention (PNC) candidate, and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) candidate. However, the latter two withdrew, leaving the NDC aspirant unopposed.
The EC subsequently reopened nominations for ten days, but no new contenders emerged before the deadline. With no challengers, Prof. Seidu was officially declared MP-elect without the need for voting.
