A 52-year-old South African man has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa after police seized suspected heroin worth more than R2 million (over GH¢1.4 million) from his luggage.
According to South African National Police Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, the suspect had just arrived on a flight from Accra, Ghana, when he was intercepted in an intelligence-led operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Border Management Authority.
A search of his luggage reportedly uncovered bullet-like objects and blocks containing substances suspected to be heroin.
The seizure is valued at more than R2 million, equivalent to approximately $118,000.
The arrest is the third suspected drug-mule case recorded at OR Tambo International Airport within three weeks, with the suspect expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court later this week to face drug trafficking charges.
Police investigations are continuing to establish whether the suspect has links to organised crime networks.
