The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted a canoe loaded with 2,213 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp on the River Volta near Tuanikopey Island in the Ada area.
The seizure was made by the Marine Police Detachment at Ada during a routine patrol at about 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026.
According to the Police, the suspected narcotic substances were concealed in 29 sacks, with the slabs wrapped in yellow cellotape.
The occupants of the outboard-powered wooden canoe reportedly abandoned the vessel and fled after spotting the Police patrol team.
A subsequent search of the canoe also uncovered 14 25-litre gallons, 12 of which contained premixed fuel, as well as two Yamaha outboard motors—one 40-horsepower and the other 30-horsepower.
The suspected narcotic substances have since been conveyed to the Ada District Police Headquarters for further investigation, while arrangements are being made to transport the outboard motors and premixed fuel to the station.
The Tema Regional Police Command said it had launched efforts to identify and apprehend the persons who abandoned the canoe and its contents.
The Police cautioned the public against engaging in the trafficking and transportation of narcotic substances and urged anyone with information on the owners or occupants of the abandoned canoe to report to the nearest Police station.
The Command also appealed to the public to provide credible information that could assist investigators in apprehending those behind the suspected narcotics consignment.
