In response to appeals from residents and NADMO following the recent canoe tragedy, the North Gonja District Assembly has donated life jackets to canoe paddlers at Daboya.
The Assembly, led by District Chief Executive Abdulai Nashiru, handed over 20 life jackets to canoe operators and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) at the Daboya Riverside.
Speaking during the presentation, Hon. Nashiru urged the paddlers to use the jackets properly to protect lives while boarding and crossing with canoes.
Touching on the slow pace of work on the Daboya Bridge, Hon. Nashiru said September was the scheduled completion date, but the spillage from the Bagre Dam, which has raised the water level, has slowed progress. He urged the contractor, Maripoma Enterprise Limited, to speed up work.
The Deputy Director of NADMO for North Gonja District, Yakubu Eliasu, educated the canoe operators on the proper use of the life jackets and other safety precautions to avoid disasters on the river.
Saeed Kagbal, a regular commuter on the river, thanked the Assembly for its timely intervention and called on other agencies to support efforts to save lives at Daboya.
The Assembly Member for Daboya East Electoral Area, Hon. Issahaku Gyan, warned that any passenger who leaves with a life jacket after crossing would be arrested if caught.
The presentation was witnessed by residents, staff of the North Gonja District Assembly, political leaders, and Chief Nabengu Wura, who represented the Wasipe Wura Palace.
