MTN Ghana has trained media and civil society practitioners to verify all AI-generated information against original sources before publication.
The hands-on masterclass was held on Monday, August 24, at MTN House, Accra, under the theme “AI for Media & Civil Society: From AI Curiosity to Evidence-Driven Confidence.”
Senior Manager for Digital Analytics and Monetisation, Kwame Manu, said AI must be used to promote public trust.
“AI should help us see further, decide better, and include more people,” he said.
Facilitators Samuel S.K. Adranyi, CEO of Afrilogic Solutions, and Nehemia Yelu Attigah, CEO of HatuaTech, demonstrated how AI could analyse Bank of Ghana reports and budget statements to identify key figures and year-on-year changes.
They, however, cautioned that such outputs must be cross-checked with original documents.
Participants were also taken through AI use in breaking news and transcription of parliamentary proceedings and press conferences, including in Twi and Ga.
The facilitators warned journalists not to publish unconfirmed casualty figures and to retain editorial control over sensitive matters involving minors, suspects and confidential sources.
They further advised against uploading sensitive documents to AI platforms without considering data retention policies and anonymising information.
About 130 journalists and CSO representatives participated in the exercise, which included tracing public funds using Auditor-General reports.
