The Ghana Police Service has deployed additional security personnel and armoured vehicles to Nkwanta following a resurgence of violent attacks that have claimed five lives.
In a statement signed by John Nchor, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Public Affairs Officer for the Oti Region said the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has ordered the immediate deployment of two armoured vehicles along with officers from the National Police Operations unit to the area. The move, according to the statement, is aimed at strengthening security and restoring calm after the disturbances.
Authorities confirmed that five bodies, comprising three males and two females, have been recovered from two separate locations within the Nkwanta South Municipality. The recovery operation was carried out by a joint security team involving the police, military, the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), Defence Intelligence, and personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service.
The police noted that calm has since been restored in the affected communities, while investigations have commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the attacks. Security agencies say efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Residents of Nkwanta and surrounding areas have been urged to remain calm and cooperate fully with security agencies by volunteering credible information to support ongoing investigations. The police also cautioned the public against spreading misinformation or engaging in actions that could further inflame tensions in the area.
