Ghana and Burkina Faso have agreed to adopt a new joint security framework aimed at combating terrorism and violent extremism, following high-level talks between officials of the two countries.
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a Facebook post on Saturday, February 21, 2026, disclosed that he held “very substantive, impactful and deeply honest conversations” with the Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, during his two-day official visit.
He added that discussions with his Burkinabè counterpart, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, were “equally positive, meaningful and forward-looking.”
According to him, both governments condemned recent terror attacks in the sub-region and expressed commiserations to affected families, while agreeing to take concrete steps to strengthen bilateral security cooperation.
“We condemned the recent terror attacks, expressed our commiserations with affected families, and decided to design and adopt a new security framework aimed at neutralising the scourge of terrorism and violent extremism,” he stated.
As part of efforts to deepen cooperation, the two countries reactivated their Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC), which had been dormant for six years. Ablakwa described the session as “extremely successful.”
At the conclusion of the PJCC, Ghana and Burkina Faso signed seven agreements, including an agreement in the field of fighting illicit cultivation, production, manufacture, and trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, as well as measures to strengthen cross-border cooperation.
The Minister noted that the renewed engagement builds on earlier meetings between President John Dramani Mahama and Burkina Faso’s leader, Ibrahim Traoré, held in January and March this year.
He expressed appreciation to the government and people of Burkina Faso for what he described as warm hospitality and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations to promote peace, stability and shared prosperity in the sub-region.
